| PROVIDING OBJECTIVE AND EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK TO STAFF The research data generated by over 200 appraisals of school leaders across three states indicates the difficulties that many leaders have with providing effective feedback. The main difficulties are as follows - Failing to specify the good (or bad) behaviours that ought be relayed to team members. Though general affirmations about "doing a good job" are better than no affirmations, the lack of specificity provides no indicators about what is especially pleasing in one's work and is thus worth continuing. Many leaders find it difficult to provide objectively critical feedback to close colleagues. It is disappointing, and professionally unfair, when committed and well-meaning leader/managers continue to engage in leadership practices that are ineffective (or worse) because their leaders and line-managers avoided addressing the issue. Some schools have yet to action professional review processes that provide the ideal vehicle for providing the affirmations and guidelines that enhance performance. It is tragic to engage in professional review processes that identify performance deficiencies that have been let run, unaddressed, for many years.
