INTRODUCING PETER DERMODY

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

·         Peter is 64 years of age, married to business partner, Heather, with three adult children. 

·         He majored in Ed Admin in gaining a B.Ed. at the University of South Australia and completed post-graduate curriculum and leadership studies at Indiana State University. 

·         He works independently from his home office at Kingston Park, SA, but regularly conducts projects interstate and has established professional links with similar consulting professionals in Australia and the UK.   

RELEVANT PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

School and Departmental Leadership

·         A Principal in both primary and secondary schools in the Northern Territory and South Australia for 27 years. He retired in 2000 after 10 years as Principal of Sacred Heart College Middle School at Mitchell Park SA, an independent sole campus college catering for 560 boys from Years 6-9. 

·         In 1990 he was selected as the inaugural Principal Education Adviser (School Support Services) in NT Department of Education (Southern Directorate). The key focus of that initial role was to conduct a complete review of the operations of the School Support Services Branch and its 30 member advisory staff. The recommendations of the review promoting a leaner and more flexible service to schools were adopted almost in entirety and without industrial negativism.

Other Skills and Experiences Relative to Leadership and School Appraisal

·         His active interest and involvement in leadership and school appraisal goes back to 1975 when he was awarded the first Commonwealth Teaching Service Overseas Study Award in 1975.  He spent a year at Indiana State University undertaking Curriculum and Leadership Research in the Department of Secondary Education. His research there led to the publication of his paper titled Humane Leadership and being invited to join a panel assessing Edgewood Elementary School, Michigan City for formal school accreditation. 

·         Regional Moderator of Leadership Appraisal in the NT. 

·         Member of multiple Principal and Deputy Appraisal Panels in SA and two in colleges in Victoria. 

·         As selected 1990 Lampe Orator to the NT Branch of ACEA chose a topic on education reform, A Reflection on Change, advocating significant changes to school governance. 

·         Presenter at various state conferences and workshops on related topics, including a presentation on School Governance to 300 Principals at the Education for the New Millennium Conference at Adelaide Town Hall in 1999.

EXECUTIVE APPRAISAL

School Leadership

As an independent appraiser of school leaders, he has been commissioned by 29 schools to date in the non-government sector in South Australia, Queensland and the NT to conduct formative and summative appraisals of over 200 school executives

The role involves preliminary meetings with appraisees and key staff; the circulation and assessment of independently constructed surveys; interviews; the preparation of comprehensive reports and debriefing sessions involving the formulation of appropriate professional action plans.
